If there’s one word to describe Carlos Claverie, it’s energetic. With his effervescent personality and contagious passion for the sport, Carlos is a seamless match for anyone looking to improve. Breathing new life into competitive swimming one critique at a time, Carlos couples technical expertise with his own personal wisdom to offer a well-rounded experience for participants.
Born to two professional tennis players in Caracas, Venezuela, Carlos discovered his knack for competition at a young age. While he dabbled in multiple sports growing up, Carlos ultimately decided to go against the family tradition and pursue his talents in the pool, landing at the University of Louisville in 2014. This decision turned out to be the most formative experience of his athletic career, one that he often revisits in teaching other swimmers.
“When I came to America for school, I had to change my mentality. I had to be open to new experiences and techniques, and I had to learn to trust my coaches. I couldn’t just lean on my own understanding and methods; I had to open my mind.”
Carlos expects his participants to come armed with similar mindsets in addition to “an intense desire to get better” in order to get the most out of the experience. Emphasizing the importance of body position and hip placement, Carlos likes to focus on the most basic elements of fast swimming before assessing each participant individually.
“I want swimmers to focus on themselves and understand that every person’s swimming is different. You can use models for your own improvement, but ultimately we have to find what works best for you.”
With this eclectic approach, Carlos hopes to not only improve his participants’ swimming abilities, but also invoke joy and renew athletes’ passions for the sport. Standing firm in his belief that swimming “brings happiness to people of all ages,” Carlos helps his swimmers find meaning beyond the times.
“You will certainly see benefits from all your hard work, but you can’t expect everything in results when you’re in this sport. Swimming has taught me how to take things a little less seriously and how to keep learning every day. You have to trust the whole process.”
Carlos hopes to be a part of that process, as he works diligently to inspire the next generation of swimmers. With an innate passion for people, Carlos is motivated by his platform to teach others.
“I love seeing my swimmers do well. It’s one thing when I jump into the pool and I’m swimming for myself, but it’s a totally different feeling when you get to watch your students learn and get better under your instruction. I love that feeling.”
