“No one wants to look back at their swimming career and think, “what if?” You will want to look back at your time in the pool and know that you gave it your all. I love encouraging younger athletes to try and think from this perspective, whether it be at practice or competition, so they can look back on their careers with gratitude.”
It is important to remember that mistakes will happen and that there are lessons to be learned in each one. There is always a silver lining even when you lose a close race, get disqualified, or take a race out too fast. They are just missteps that you are seldom to repeat again and that you can strategize over for your next race.
“I have come to appreciate swimming as a part of my identity because it has given me so much. There are not many experiences that I cannot credit to swimming in my life. Swimming has instilled characteristics that stayed with me long after my time in the pool; it has given me employment opportunities and has introduced me to my closest friends. Even when you feel like your swimming career is in a slump, it is essential to remember that the sport is so much more than just times and medals,” shares Courtney.
