Evgenii Somov likes to keep Fitter & Faster camps fun and entertaining. He says, “A happy swimmer is a fast swimmer. I try to create an energetic environment by running fun drills, and giving participants opportunities to race between drills. That helps keep their attention and makes their time with me enjoyable.”
Evgenii is a successful breaststroker, a five-time ACC champion in the 100-yard breaststroke and NCAA Champion swimming the breaststroke leg in the 200-yard medley relay. He acknowledges that breaststroke is not natural for most swimmers due to the unique movement of the lower body. He teaches Fitter & Faster camp participants how to stretch, making their knees and legs more flexible so that they can grab more water, resulting in a more powerful kick.
Sharing with camp participants what kept him motivated Evgenii says, “Balancing school, a personal life, and training is hard and it is important to stay positive and keep your eye on the prize. I would write on a note card what my goals were and put it near my bed or on my door. When it was difficult to wake up early to train, or my body hurt from a tough session the day before, those note cards helped me remember why I swim.” Whatever your swimmer’s goal, whether it be to swim in high school or be an Olympic qualifier, they can learn valuable lessons and acquire useful tools from Fitter & Faster camps.
