Bio

Javier “Javi” Acevedo is a three-time Canadian Olympian, five-time World Championship medalist, and NCAA All-American. Growing up in Scarborough, Ontario, Javi developed from a young age-group swimmer into one of Canada’s top international competitors. He represented Team Canada at the 2016, 2020, and 2024 Olympic Games.

Javi continued his swimming career at the University of Georgia under Hall of Fame Head Coach Jack Bauerle. He established himself as an accomplished backstroke and freestyle specialist, earning NCAA All-American honors and an SEC Championship. He also became a respected team leader and an important contributor to Georgia’s relay success.

Throughout his career, Javi has focused on setting intentional goals, analyzing races, and refining technique. He understands how small adjustments and consistent habits can make a difference in competition. As a clinician, Javi brings that experience directly to young swimmers. He breaks down advanced skills into clear, practical lessons while helping athletes develop confidence, resilience, and a stronger understanding of their swimming.

From the Clinician

My Approach to Teaching

“I bring a combination of international swimming experience, athlete leadership, and a genuine passion for helping young athletes succeed. I focus on teaching not just the ‘what’ but the ‘why’ behind each skill. My goal is to give swimmers practical tools they can apply in practice and competition.

I believe effective teaching starts with understanding where each swimmer is in their development. I adapt my instruction to their needs and provide clear, specific feedback. I also share lessons from my own competitive experience to make new concepts easier to understand.”

Controlling the Process

“I improved throughout my career by setting intentional goals, seeking feedback, and learning from coaches, teammates, and competitors. I developed strong habits around race analysis, technique refinement, and mental preparation. Those habits helped me continue improving over time.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is to focus on controlling the process rather than obsessing over the outcome. Challenges and setbacks are part of swimming. Learning to adapt and respond to them is an important part of becoming a better athlete.”

A Transformative Journey

“One of the most meaningful experiences in my life was progressing from a young swimmer to representing Canada at the Olympic Games. That journey taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of continuous improvement. It also showed me how much of a difference great coaches and mentors can make.

I want every swimmer I work with to leave feeling more confident, motivated, and excited about improving. I strive to create a positive environment where athletes feel comfortable learning new skills, asking questions, and challenging themselves.”

More Than Just a Sport

“I’m passionate about teaching young swimmers because I know firsthand how much this sport can give them. Swimming builds confidence, resilience, discipline, and lifelong friendships. It has allowed me to represent Canada, travel the world, and develop skills that extend far beyond the pool.

Some of my most meaningful experiences and relationships have come through swimming. There is nothing more rewarding than watching a young athlete learn a new skill, gain confidence, and discover a love for the sport. I hope to help swimmers build skills and experiences that stay with them long after they leave the pool.”
